Obesity and Its Management: An Ayurvedic & Healthy Living Perspective

Obesity is becoming one of the biggest health challenges of our time. With busy lifestyles, irregular eating habits, and reduced physical activity, more and more people are gaining excess weight. Obesity is not just about body shape—it increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, joint problems, infertility, and even certain cancers.

But the good news is obesity can be managed and even prevented with the right approach.

What is Obesity?

Obesity means having excess body fat that affects health.

A person with a Body Mass Index (BMI) above 25 is considered overweight.

A BMI above 30 is considered obese.


In Ayurveda, obesity is known as Sthaulya / Medoroga. It is caused by an imbalance in Kapha dosha and improper metabolism of Meda dhatu (fat tissue).


Causes of Obesity

1. Eating fried, oily, and junk foods often

2. Lack of physical activity (sedentary lifestyle)

3. Stress, anxiety, and emotional overeating

4. Irregular sleep patterns

5. Genetic and hormonal factors


 Complications of Obesity

Diabetes (Type 2)

High blood pressure & heart diseases

Infertility and menstrual irregularities in women

Sleep apnea and breathing problems

Low self-esteem and depression


 Ayurvedic concept for Weight Management

1. Right Diet (Ahara)

Eat light, warm, and freshly prepared food.

Avoid excess sweets, fried, and heavy foods.

Use spices like ginger, turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon asthey improve digestion and metabolism.

Include green leafy vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and pulses.

Drink warm water frequently—it helps dissolve fat (Ama).


2. Lifestyle (Vihara)

Wake up early and avoid day sleep (divaswapna).

Do regular physical activity: walking, yoga, cycling, or swimming.

Practice deep breathing and meditation to reduce stress.

Maintain proper sleep—7 hours at night is ideal.


3. Herbal Support (Oushadhi)

(Some commonly used Ayurvedic herbs for weight management: Consult your Ayurvedic doctor before use)

Triphala : Helps in digestion and detoxification.

Guggulu : Improves fat metabolism.

Methi (Fenugreek seeds) : controls appetite and sugar.

Vrikshamla (Garcinia) : supports natural weight loss.

Lasuna(Garlic) 🧄: used in fat metabolism and known for preventive aspect of infarction.

4. Panchakarma (Detox Therapies)

Virechana (purgation therapy) – removes toxins and reduces fat.

Udwartana (powder massage) – breaks down fat deposits.

Basti (medicated enema) – balances metabolism.

 Daily yoga practice improves digestion, tones muscles, and burns fat. Helpful postures include:

Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation)
Bhujangasana (Cobra pose)
Dhanurasana (Bow pose)
Naukasana (Boat pose)
Kapalabhati & Anulom-Vilom Pranayama
