Hair Fall: Causes, Remedies, and Prevention
Hair is often called the "crowning glory," and healthy, thick hair is considered a sign of vitality. But in today’s lifestyle, hair fall has become one of the most common complaints among both men and women. Understanding why it happens and how to manage it is the first step toward healthy hair.
Why Does Hair Fall?
Hair fall is natural:every day we lose about 50–100 hairs, which is normal. But when the shedding is more than this, or when hair growth slows down, it becomes noticeable and concerning.
Common Causes of Hair Fall:
1. Nutritional Deficiency – Lack of proteins, iron, vitamin D, B-complex, and zinc can weaken hair roots.
2. Hormonal Changes – Thyroid imbalance, PCOS, menopause, or post-pregnancy changes affect hair growth.
3. Stress & Sleep Issues – Mental strain disturbs the body’s balance, leading to hair fall.
4. Scalp Problems – Dandruff, infections, or excess oiliness can block follicles.
5. Lifestyle Factors – Pollution, irregular food habits, excessive use of chemical hair products, and heat styling damage the scalp and hair shaft.
6. Genetics – Family history plays a strong role in male and female pattern baldness.
Tips to Control Hair Fall
1. Nutrition First
Eat a balanced diet rich in green leafy vegetables, fruits, sprouts, nuts, seeds, and pulses.
Include protein-rich foods like eggs, milk, soy, and legumes.
Add iron-rich foods (spinach, beetroot, jaggery), and omega-3 fatty acids (flax seeds, walnuts).
2. Healthy Scalp = Healthy Hair
Wash hair 2–3 times a week with mild, herbal shampoo.
Massage scalp with warm coconut, bhringraj, or amla oil at least twice a week to improve blood circulation.
3. Lifestyle Modifications
Practice stress management through yoga, pranayama, or meditation.
Ensure 7–8 hours of sleep daily.
Avoid smoking and excess alcohol, as they reduce blood flow to hair follicles.
4. Ayurvedic Remedies
Bhringraj (Eclipta alba): Called "Kesharaja" (king of hair), strengthens roots and promotes growth.
Amla (Indian Gooseberry): Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, prevents premature greying and hair fall.
Aloe vera: Soothes scalp and nourishes hair follicles.
Fenugreek seeds (Methi): Soak overnight, grind, and apply paste to scalp for strengthening roots.
5. Protect & Care
Avoid frequent chemical treatments like straightening, perming, or coloring.
Protect hair from sun, dust, and pollution by covering with a scarf.
Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle gently.
